Grammar Gripe
Okay people, spot the error(s):
Your cover letter tells an employer a lot about you, good or bad. Think of it as a sales pitch. It’s primary purpose is to show why your skills and background are a perfect match for the position for which you're applying. It is not the place to present all of your experience, that should already be showcased in your resume.

It's Its, not It's.

And --- why would you tell a prospective employer anything bad about you.

You got it! I couldn't believe it. In the next paragraph, the writer explained the importance of an error-free letter. [insert eyeroll]

I would have written it thusly:
"Good or Bad, your cover letter tells an employer a lot about you. Think of it as a sales pitch: Its primary purpose is to show why your skills and background are a perfect match for the position for which you're applying. It's not the place to present all of your experience; that should already be showcased in your resume."
Of course, I'm a colon/semi-colon freak.
(No, I'm not going to suggest I explore YOUR colon.)

Why it's the English comma, of course! Why have two proper sentences when you can just make a big divided one using a comma? Sometimes when I am feeling sarcastic, I write in my journal-dou thingy that way.

Yes, Thomas, that comma-instead-of-a-semi-colon thing was bugging me, too.
Bee, two sentences would have worked, too.
I'm composing a cover letter in my head as I'm converting my cv to readable ASCII.

Its vs. It's: OK, here's my take. 'It's' is the contraction for 'it is' or 'it has'.
'Its' is possesive.
Counterintuitive, but, that's the law!

That's right, LittleMike.
Sooooo many people use "it's" for the possessive. It's enough to drive a woman nuts!
Posted by: Alison | August 19, 2005 at 14:29
The it's/its thing has driven me insane. Yeah, that's it. And there's nothing wrong with a semi-colon every now and then.

Apostrophes where they are not correct make me crazy. I overuse semi-colons though.
Posted by: Margaret | August 19, 2005 at 17:25
I thought that semi-colons, like cowbell, could never be overused.
Posted by: Allan | August 19, 2005 at 17:44
I never learned how to use semi-colons.

if most of you english speaking folk doesn't know about correct spelling of 'it´s' vs. 'its' - me as an english grammar rules ignoring German feel free to use 'em my way - & english commas, they are so total different to the use of commas in German, where in my minds eye are much too much commas used - since all I know of the language confusion in different languages I feel free to use '-'s and ';' etc. just like I want to place them around in my texts (exactly I gave up the use of ';' (semicolons) since some years totaly off my writing- they are so 'in between'..) - well I may think different if I write an application in another country one time - but I would ask a friend: " hey, can you set my commas right?"
